Monday Movie Review - Clash of the Titans

For some variety, I will post a review of Clash of the Titans which my daughter and I went to last night.

So this is a retelling of the 1981 movie with the iconic Ray Harryhausen claymation monsters. It's pretty accurate I think (although it's been awhile since I've seen the original) but it doesn't make huge changes. The humans are rising up against the gods and when the gods strike back Perseus' adopted family is killed. He's rescued by the people of Argos where Hades announces he will release the Kracken to destroy them in 10 days. Perseus and a rag tag band of remaining soldiers set out to stop him having lots of mythical adventures along the way.

So yes, it's a rollicking good adventure story. Lots of great special effects, dramatic landscapes although I have to admit when they look up at the citadel of Argos it looks like a painting. That was weak, but the creatures were good. The acting? Well, it was better than GI Joe. LOL Sam Worthington is okay and he had just this slight Australian accent which was adorable. Not sure that's the demeanor he was going for. Everyone speaks in a variety of accents, British, Australian, American, whatever. Not nearly enough shirtlessness, but lots of leg shots. And then this honey caught my eye. He plays Eusebios, one of the soldiers with Perseus. Yum. Yes, he's legal, he's 20 so hush up. I was quite disappointed when he was turned to stone.

So if you decide to go, accept it for what it was, an fun action movie, not high art. I would not pay the extra for 3-D again. Half the time when I removed my glasses it wasn't even in 3-D, so don't feel you'll miss much if you don't pay the extra. There are no things flying off the screen at you.

Nicholas Hoult - Eusebios

Sam Worthington - Perseus

I'm getting old, I can tell. Having trouble finding boyz cute if they're young enough that I could be their mom... gah.

Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be an issue for me. Just looking though, anything closer would squick me out. He looked older all dressed up in is soldier gear with long hair in the movie That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :-P

Yay! Movie reviews!

Sam Worthington is hot, hot, hot! The Australian accent only adds to the appeal. He was the best thing about the recent Terminator movie.

Nicholas Hoult was the kid in About a Boy. He's also been in UK raunchy teen drama Skins. He does look about 14 though, despite being 20. He's got no facial hair for goodness sake!

I'm rather partial to Harry Hamlin in the original so I'm not sure Sam Worthington really has the same wide-eyed innocent look as HH.

Lack of men without shirts is a big negative. I mean, come on. I bet all the women were half dressed weren't they. *sigh*

Tam said...

Val: I've never seen the Terminator but he was in Avatar but with no accent, or an American accent I suppose. He is tasty

Jen: Yeah yeah, I know but damn he's got a great pouty lip. LOL Worthington was gave off more of a "pissed off out for revenge" vibe. But it was fun.

Actually there were very few women with roles, just one and she was pretty much dressed in long dress the whole time, just one shoulder bare. She did manage to remain spotlessly clean and with tidy hair despite rolling down hills and being chased by giant scorpions.

Tam, moi love, as Jenre mentioned, Nicholas Hoult was like the lead in Skins, and he was shown several times in skin tight white boxerbriefs.

I got the whole series on DVD, so when you come visit, we can watch them...or just the first episode. It opens with him waking up and getting out of bed....and I'll say no more. :)

HUGS....

I was so sad at the lack of skin in this flick. *sigh* And I wished that Sam had given Perseus some personality. I did love his merry band of soldiers and I practically swooned over Pegasus. Also, Apollo was a cutie tho' he only had a line or two.

Tam said...

Oh, now I'm even looking forward to coming to visit sooner Polt. Not that just seeing you wouldn't have been superb. :-)

I forgot to mention Pegasus Wren. I thought it was really well done. Too often winged horses look stupid but this one was good. There was another young guy in the soldier brigade who was also very nice.

wren boudreau said...

I noticed the other guy, too. Don't know the character's name or who played him, tho'.

My hub and brother went to see this last night. Hub said it was good but her really preferred the original.

Tam said...

Glad you and I were so focused on the plot Wren. ;-)

Tam said...

I'll have to watch the original again Tracy. It's been a while. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't something I'd rave about it, you get what you expect really.

There was a plot?

"Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be an issue for me."

Don't you mean fortunately?? LOL.

I'm also trying to work out what this is actually a review of, you perves.

I went and saw it over the weekend. My daughter loved it while my teenage son fell asleep. I really enjoyed it, but I liked the original one, too. Bubo the owl was only in the new movie for a blink of an eye, though.

Tam said...

It was the review of their amazing acting skills and a complex plot about the value of religion in modern society Kris. Sheesh. :-P

Sometimes I think I should be squicked out but I just can't work up the self-indignation.

Tam said...

Everyone seems to comment on the missing owl Stephani but I really must watch the old one again because I'm kind of like "whatever". I did enjoy it, it's a fun movie with lots of action, just not very 3-Dish.

I love anything that even brushes up against a Greek myth.

Nicholas looks younger than my son, so eww. Not that I know how old he really is but he looks like a baby to me. At least Sam looks like a real man, much better.

Oh, and about the movie. Haven't seen either the original or this one. :D

Poor Nicholas looks like an eleven-year-old girl. But at least he isn't bone ugly like that guy in the Twilight movies (the one with the beetle brow and narrow eyes and squished-down nose). Maybe he'll look like an adult male by the time he's 35.

I've heard this movie panned, in part because the 3-D portions were really sub par. Too bad. I saw the original and rather liked it.

Tam said...

It's okay Lily, I'm perving on the young ones enough to cover your lack of interest. :-)

I'll bet your grandson would like the old one, it's pretty cheesy, I think this one would be a bit intense for him. You guys should rent it.

Tam said...

But he's so purty KZ. :-D

The 3-D was pretty lame Every now and then I'd take my glasses off and there was no 3-D. It seems like every movie coming out is 3-D so they are all jumping on the bandwagon even if it doesn't make sense. It's freaking expensive too. It cost $28 for two of us, just the movie. Treats would have been another $15. I refuse to buy movie treats.

I so need to see this movie... I am a huge Harry Hamlin fan so can't see Worthington toppling him off my hill...

He looked older all dressed up in is soldier gear with long hair in the movie That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I so love how you have your priories right... stick to your guns girl....

I like 3D - but it muck up my eyes when I step out of the cinema for a good hour...

Thanks for the round up...

I'm trying to think of the last movie we went to that was 3-D. Hmmm. Not that long ago but it was better. Avatar, now I remember. It was worth the money. This was pretty flat.

I really must rent the original again EH so see how it stacks up. It's been a long time since I've seen it.

Hi Tam,

Since Nicholas Hoult looks so young in your pic, I looked around. Here's another that's a bit hotter: http://www.skinsmusic.com/tony-stonem.htm

Research is a bitch huh Wren? LOL Thanks. :-)

It's his mouth, that cupid's bow upper lip, the pouty lower, oh yeah.

I have a total jones for Sam Worthington, even if he is Australian.

I saw the original on video many moons ago! I'd love to see this, but not in 3d I think. Cool review. :)

Tam said...

Oh he is dreamy Sarah, even if he's Australian. ;-) To us North Americans that just makes him more attractive. Anything different you know.
