Don't have much today

I have been in kind of a reading slump. 247 pages since Sunday? What's up with that? It's like read 3 paragraphs, surf the net, read 5 paragraphs, flick around the TV channels, read 3 paragraphs, have conversation with cat. Sigh. And it's not reflection of the book because I really enjoyed it, just couldn't focus. We'll see how it goes now that I've actually finished one and I went shopping yesterday so I have lots of new things to read and no excuses.

So what's new you ask? Well, I did find out and internet friend of mine has been diagnosed with liver cancer. We don't talk regularly although we run into each other on blogs and we always said if he wasn't gay we'd get married. :-) My heart breaks for him. They've said 9-12 months, whatever that means and I know liver cancer is a bitch. Wish I was closer but Virginia is very far away. So that kind of sucks. It also makes me realize how fragile internet friendships can be. He takes breaks from the internet periodically where we don't talk and if something happened to him and he disappeared forever I'd likely never know why. That's kind of sad. I sometimes think I should leave a message in my will of all the websites I need to have it announced if I die. Wow, morbid huh?

Otherwise same old same old. Spring seems to be here. There is hardly any snow left in the open areas. My daughter is on spring break next week. We were going to go to Quebec City for a couple of days but now we are going to San Francisco in October so I'm saving my money for that. She'll spend a couple of days with her Dad's and maybe I'll take some afternoons off. We can meet for lunch and hang out downtown. Work is pretty slow and boring so nothing exciting there either. Blah. So the one book I did read.

Immortality is the Suck by AM Riley (247 pages)

Adam is a cop but he's worked in undercover vice for years as part of a motorcycle gang in LA. He is a dirty cop in that he deals drugs, has been hooked on drugs, and doesn't really see that it's a big deal. He's not bad-bad, but he's not good. He's had an on-going affair with perfect cop Peter for 15 years. Adam is killed one night and wakes up a vampire. He spends the rest of the book dragging Peter into his shit as he tries to figure out what is going on and gets caught up in a plan to start a vampire gang who will rule LA. He ends up helping the police break up the gang, almost against his will. Adam is a total dick, he cheats on Peter every 5 minutes, treats him like dirt, steals drugs, lies, etc. but you don't hate him because he knows he's a total dick. He's quite aware that he's an asshole and all the things he does are wrong and it niggles a bit at the back of his head, but not enough to make him stop and Peter certainly doesn't help by giving in everytime Adam comes around. Being undead gives him a bit more time to think about it, he doesn't really change, but he does admit to even more than before. So I think if he had been "it's not my fault" about everything he would have been annoying but because he owns his behaviour you can accept him. I also like the way it's written as if he's talking to you directly. There are little comments about not looking away because you are reading a book. Kind of as if he told his story to someone who wrote it down. It worked for me. So on the whole, despite the fact I would love to find Adam loathsome I quite liked him (which is how he's managed to get away with his behaviour so long). I did want to give Peter the odd kick in the ass but on the whole a great read. There is a sequel which I bought yesterday as well, so hopefully I'll enjoy it as much. For those though who like their romance heroes monogamous and falling in true love this is not that book.

Oh and that cover? It was one of the first ones using that shade of blue (it's all the rage now though) and I'm telling you, I would buy a VCR manual if it had that colour on the cover.

To lighten things up a bit and since Chris at Stumbling Over Chaos is sending me music with a Canadian theme, here's a little video about Canada for you all to enjoy.

I just stumbled across your place via Kris and Chris, love it here! I know what you mean about a reading slump, very frustrating.

You've got an award over at my place

Thanks for stopping by Patti. Glad you like it.

Thanks for the award too. I'll put Mr. Sexy on the sidebar. :-)

Well poop, it's not letting me save it and I can't access photobucket at work. I'll do it when I get home tonight though. :-)

I love that video!!

Did you read the odd little short related to that book? It was written before, but takes place after, if I remember correctly.

Sending you anti-book slump vibes!!

Tam said...

Hmmm. Haven't heard of the short. Oh there is one about "What to Get the Vampire Who Has Everything". Is that the one you mean? Seems to me it was a Christmas short. I haven't read it though.

I loved this book and have started the sequel today. Adam *sigh* you can't help but like him despite all the flaws.

Chris said...

Yup, that's it. It was ok, but the book you just finished is way better.

I was going to comment on including how to deal with one's death online in a will - it's actually not a weird thing to think about. Lifehacker or Consumerist have had various articles about it.

Jen: If someone just described him you'd hate him, but he's written in such a way you like even though he's a jerk. LOL I'm looking forward to the sequel but I think I'll give it a bit of space. Sometimes reading books back to back can be a not so good thing. Just depends but I'll wait.

I suppose with everyone having an on-line life these days, preparing to exit from that is no different than informing neighbors and friends in real life. Something to think about for sure.

Still, creepy to think about tho'.

Love the hotties.

I'm looking forward to reading the follow up to Immortality. Maybe it would make sense to go back and read the Christmas one again - weird how they were written (or published) out of sequence.

And great video, Tam!

Hey Tam! Wow... you are right... Guess I need a list for my virtual buddies. Cuz it would kinda suck to have you disappear on me and me not know why.

Okay... time to stop thinking and just be! So here I am to save the day... couldn't resist!!! Couldn't.

I'm doing some book shopping tonight and Immortality and the sequel are on my list. I can't wait to read them after all the good things I've heard lately.

I saw that video the other day, loved it. I also love the so in love porn stars. How sweet of them to have that clause. :D

Wren, I suppose sometimes someone writes a storyabout a couple ten tings "Hmmm, how did they get to that point" so it's kind of a prequel I suppose. If that's how this was done.

The video is fun, my daughter found it

Tam said...

Thanks Cecile. I just talked with my daughter tonight at dinner and told her if I die she's supposed to contact certain people, then we decided that she'd just tell all my Facebook friends because that would cover all three groups of internet friends who could spread the word. So I'm good now. All taken care of, I can rest easy. :-)

Immortality is definitely worth the money.

They are cute aren't they. I was reading their interview at beautiful mag and it was very sweet. Oh they aren't legally married but had a ceremony and one of them took the other's last name, not sure which way but they use one. I think they've been together 5 years.

Shit. I'm so sorry to hear about your friend, Tam.

Hey, isn't that the clip that the girl child made you send to me cos it disses Aussies??

Tam said...

Hi Hilda. Thanks for stopping by. Good luck with your move. Hopefully you'll enjoy it here.

You reminded me, must put my little gnome up here. Thanks.

Tam said...

Thanks Kris. He's taking chemo and said he's doing okay, so I'll hope he's a lucky one.

It doesn't DISS Aussies, we fully acknowledge you have koalas which are way cool, we just have more better stuff. LOL

I feel bad about your friend, Tam. Really sorry to hear it. I lost one of my RL "Bachelor Boys" (that's what I've always called my male pals) to the same disease.

On a brighter note, your Hottie couple is lovely. Thanks for giving us a bit of their story!

Tam said...

Thanks KZ. I'll hope for the best but I know it's a nasty one.

Beautiful mag is like Playboy for straight girls. Sometimes we just look at the pictures and sometimes we read the articles and find interesting things. LOL I read the story about Tony and Clint the models which is similar but without the porn there. :-)
